A great opportunity to see the benefits in action…
Financial Planning Corporation (FPC) had the opportunity to see the benefits of one of their sponsored Sense of Summer memory baskets in action at a recent presentation at James Dixon Court care home.
Developed by National Museums Liverpool’s House of Memories programme, the memory baskets enable carers and people living with dementia to enjoy sharing summer time memories together and to stimulate conversation about the past.
The contents of the Sense of Summer memory baskets have been designed to represent the great outdoors, including items related to gardening, home grown produce and summer picnics. Multi-sensory items deliver benefits for people with varying levels of sensory communication and include items to stimulate smell, hearing, touch and sight such as scent flasks, an interactive bird song book, a felt picnic blanket and garden-themed CDs.
Inspired by Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram’s pledge to build a dementia-friendly Liverpool City Region, House of Memories invited local authorities in Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral to nominate a care home in each borough to receive a Sense of Summer memory basket.
This is the latest in a range of House of Memories projects which FPC has been proud to support since the programme started in 2012. Previous contributions have helped to fund memory suitcases, training days and training support for more than 12,000 carers of people living with dementia across the North West.
Partner at FPC, Moira O’Shaughnessy comments “We are delighted to have been able to contribute to the Sense of Summer memory baskets. Attending the presentation at James Dixon Court provided us with a unique opportunity to see the benefits that the residents experience in action. We look forward to helping to fund more initiatives in the future to contribute to the creation of a dementia-friendly Liverpool.”
